It is free to get tested for COVID-19 if you:
- have COVID-19 symptoms
- are a household contact
- have been told to get a test by a health official
Pre-ordering your test is the quickest and easiest option. You can request a RAT online, or call 0800 222 478.
You will be sent instructions on how to collect your test from a RAT Collection Centre.
Visit a Community Testing Centre instead if you need help using a RAT, or you were advised to get a PCR test or a supervised test.
Community Testing Centres - what to expect
Community Testing Centres are under a lot of demand at the moment. While staff are doing their best to manage please be kind and be patient.
Before going to get tested check the information below:
- Check you are eligible for free testing; you need to have COVID-19 symptoms or be a household contact. If you aren't eligible you can't get tested at a Community Testing Centre. Lots of pharmacies now stock COVID-19 RATs for purchase.
- It may be quicker to order a RAT kit for collection instead. You can do this online or by calling 0800222478 for free.
- Be prepared to wait; we are seeing long queues at the moment. We recommend bringing water, snacks, and devices to keep you entertained. If you are going to a walk-in clinic you may also need items to protect you from the weather (e.g. sun cream, or a coat).
- There are occasions when a testing centre may need to close at short notice. This could be because of long queues or system outages. While we do our best to reflect live site information, it may not be updated immediately upon a site closing. You may want to check the options for which centre you can visit if your first option becomes unavailable.
Testing at your workplace
Some workplaces choose to arrange surveillance testing of their staff and visitors. If your workplace wishes to complete surveillance testing, and you are not a critical service participating in the Return to Work scheme, this will need to be organised through a private laboratory and testing provider. Find a private testing supplier.
Supervised vs unsupervised RATs
Most people will have an unsupervised RAT; this is where you are asked to carry out the test by yourself.
If you are tested at a healthcare facility it is likely to be supervised; this is where it’s carried out by a healthcare professional or someone trained to administer RATs.
